Le differenze fra queste due espressioni per\u00f2 ci sono, e grazie a questo articolo scoprirai come usare queste due espressioni al meglio!<\/span><\/p><h2>Differenze tra wish e if only &#8211; <em>Wish upon a star<\/em><\/h2><p>In inglese, abbiamo una famosa filastrocca per bambini usata per esprimere un desiderio. Leggila e presta attenzione a come usiamo <em>I wish<\/em>:<\/p><p><em>Star light, star bright<\/em><br \/><em>First star I see tonight<\/em><br \/><strong><em>I wish I may, I wish I might<\/em><\/strong><br \/><em>Have this wish I wish tonight<\/em><\/p><p><em>I wish<\/em> pu\u00f2 essere seguito da diverse <em>verb phrases <\/em>(costruzioni o frasi verbali, come nel caso di <em>I may<\/em> o <em>I might<\/em>). In questo esempio,<strong><em> may<\/em><\/strong> e <strong><em>might<\/em><\/strong> sono entrambi verbi modali e sono sempre seguiti da <em>bare infinitive<\/em> (ovvero il verbo all\u2019infinito senza <em>\u201cto\u201d<\/em>).\u00a0<\/p><p>Se dovessimo davvero usare questa filastrocca per esprimere un desiderio, dovremmo quindi \u201ccompletare\u201d la frase con un verbo all\u2019infinito, ad esempio:<\/p><p><strong><em>I wish I may <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>travel<\/em><\/strong><em> to New York one day. <\/em><em>(wish + modal + <\/em><em>bare infinitive<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/p><p>Nella realt\u00e0, \u201c<em>I wish I might<\/em>\u201d non \u00e8 molto comune ed \u00e8 pi\u00f9 una formula letteraria. Vediamo quindi altre possibilit\u00e0 pi\u00f9 frequentemente usate con <em>I wish<\/em>:<\/p><ul><li><strong><em>I wish I could<\/em><\/strong><em> see you next week<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>I wish you would <\/em><\/strong><em>stop it right now!<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Anche <em>could e would<\/em> sono verbi modali (quindi seguiti da <em>bare infinitive<\/em>) che possono essere usati per esprimere <strong>desideri futuri<\/strong>. In particolare, <em>would<\/em> \u00e8 molto spesso usato per esprimere un fastidio verso qualcosa!\u00a0<\/p><p>Per farti un\u2019idea pi\u00f9 chiara, confronta i verbi nei seguenti esempi:<\/p><ul><li><em>I wish you <\/em><strong><em>would listen<\/em><\/strong><em> to me.<\/em><\/li><li><em>I wish you <\/em><strong><em>listened<\/em><\/strong> <em>to me.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>In entrambi i casi, il verbo \u00e8 listen, ma hanno la stessa intensit\u00e0? No, la prima frase \u00e8 molto pi\u00f9 efficace a esprimere una sensazione di disturbo o fastidio.<\/p><p>Vediamo ora la seconda frase. Il verbo listen \u00e8 riportato al past simple; ma si sta riferendo quindi a un desiderio passato?<\/p><p>No. Il motivo \u00e8 che in inglese <em>time and tense don\u2019t always go together<\/em>. In particolare, dobbiamo tenere a mente che <em>present is real <\/em>(lo usiamo infatti per esprimere abitudini o cose sempre vere, es. \u201c<em>I <\/em><em>live<\/em><em> in Milan<\/em>\u201d), mentre usiamo i tempi passati per \u201callontanarci\u201d dalla realt\u00e0.<\/p><p>Un desiderio per il futuro NON \u00e8 un fatto reale, quindi in inglese lo esprimiamo con il <em>past simple.<\/em><\/p><ul><li><strong><em>I wish I <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>lived<\/em><\/strong><em> in the United States.<\/em> <em>(wish + <\/em><em>past simple<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>I wish you <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>were<\/em><\/strong><em> here.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>E per desideri riferiti davvero al passato (come rimorsi o <em>regrets<\/em>)? Dobbiamo applicare la regola e \u201cspostarci\u201d ancora pi\u00f9 nel passato con il <em>past perfect<\/em>:<\/p><ul><li><strong><em>I wish you <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>hadn\u2019t done<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> that.<\/em><\/strong> <em>(wish + <\/em><em>past perfect<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>I wish I <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>had listened<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> to you!<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><em>I wish<\/em><\/strong><strong> e <\/strong><strong><em>If only<\/em><\/strong><strong>: diversi o uguali?<\/strong><\/p><p><em>Tricky question!<\/em> Abbiamo detto che <em>I wish<\/em> e <em>If only<\/em> ci permettono di esprimere un intenso desiderio per qualcosa. Per capire meglio in che modo usarli correttamente, prendiamo esempio da alcune frasi:<\/p><ul><li><em>I don\u2019t like my job.<\/em><strong><em> I wish<\/em><\/strong><em> I could get a better one!<\/em> <em>(wish + modal + bare infinitive)<\/em><\/li><li><em>I don\u2019t like my job.<\/em><strong><em> If only<\/em><\/strong><em> I could get a better job!<\/em> <em>(if only + modal + bare infinitive)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong><em>I wish<\/em><\/strong><em> you made this cake more often.<\/em> <em>(wish + past simple)<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>If only<\/em><\/strong><em> you made this cake more often.<\/em> <em>(if only + past simple)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong><em>I wish<\/em><\/strong><em> you had listened to me. <\/em> <em>(wish + past perfect)<\/em><\/li><li><strong><em>If only<\/em><\/strong><em> you had listened to me.<\/em> <em>(if only + past perfect)<\/em><\/li><\/ul><p>Gi\u00e0 a colpo d\u2019occhio puoi vedere come, in termini di struttura, non ci sia alcuna differenza tra I wish e If only. Puoi tranquillamente invertire le due strutture e la frase rester\u00e0 identica. Ma quindi, cambia il significato?<\/p><p>In termini di <em>meaning<\/em>, possiamo dire che s\u00ec, in effetti <em>If only<\/em> \u00e8 decisamente pi\u00f9 intenso (e teatrale!) di <em>I wish<\/em>. Usiamo <em>If only <\/em>quasi come fosse una invocazione: \u201cah, se solo potessi volare\u201d (<em>If only I could fly<\/em>).<\/p><p>Pronto a metterti alla prova con <em>I wish<\/em> e <em>If only<\/em>?<\/p><h2>Differenze tra wish e if only: tocca a te!<\/h2><p>Ti \u00e8 chiara la differenza tra wish e if only? Trasforma le frasi in modo che abbiano lo stesso significato.
