Quante volte vi siete chiesti quale mai sia la differenza tra \u201cever\u201d e \u201cnever\u201d?
Avrete forse letto o sentito che entrambi traducono la parola italiana \u201cmai\u201d, ma allora perch\u00e9 non possono essere interscambiabili? Come mai in alcune frasi si usa il primo e in alcune altre il secondo?

Ever e never: quando si usano?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Come saprete, a differenza dell\u2019italiano, in inglese la doppia negazione non \u00e8 ammessa. Ecco perch\u00e9, se nella frase \u00e8 gi\u00e0 presente una negazione, useremo ever<\/em> mentre se non ce n\u2019\u00e8 nessuna useremo never<\/em><\/span> <\/em>(che potremo considerare come la forma negativa di ever<\/em>, ovvero \u201cnot\u2026 ever\u201d). Per esempio:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t ever<\/strong> want to see this boy in our house again <\/em>
VS
I never <\/strong>want to see this boy in our house again <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come vedete, la frase ha lo stesso identico significato, ma a seconda che sia presente la negazione o meno cambieremo l\u2019avverbio utilizzato. Ecco perch\u00e9 anche nelle frasi che presentano \u201cnobody\u201d o \u201cnothing\u201d, di per s\u00e9 parole negative, vedremo sempre usare ever<\/em>. Per esempio:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody ever <\/strong>told Alan that he\u2019s a good singer
Nothing like this has ever <\/strong>happened to me <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never viene usato quindi solo nelle frasi in cui non \u00e8 gi\u00e0 presente una negazione.
Invece ci sono molti altri casi in cui possiamo usare ever<\/em>,<\/strong> ovvero:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Nelle frasi interrogative e interrogative negative <\/strong>come:
    Has Alan ever auditioned for a role in a playwright?
    Have you ever met my sister?
    Hasn\u2019t John ever been to Southern Italy? <\/em>
    <\/li>
  2. Con l\u2019espressione \u201cthe first time\u201d<\/strong>, come in questo caso in cui rafforza ed enfatizza il concetto di prima volta in cui si fa qualcosa:
    This is the first time I\u2019ve ever seen a movie so long!
    <\/em><\/li>
  3. Dopo i superlativi:<\/strong>
    He is the most demanding client ever <\/em>
    <\/li>
  4. Con i comparativi <\/strong>nella forma than ever<\/em>:
    My life is now better than ever
    <\/em><\/li>
  5. Con l\u2019aggettivo only<\/em><\/strong> e gli avverbi hardly<\/em> e barely<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>(questi ultimi hanno, in effetti, il significato negativo di \u201ca malapena\u201d):
    This is the only thing that I\u2019ve ever wanted
    We hardly ever go to the cinema
    She barely ever replies to my emails
    <\/em><\/li>
  6. Dopo if<\/em>:<\/strong>
    If you ever want a job, don\u2019t hesitate to contact me
    <\/em><\/li>
  7. Ever <\/em>pu\u00f2 fungere da rafforzativo <\/strong>nelle frasi con la seguente struttura; in questo esempio la frase funzionerebbe lo stesso anhe senza ever<\/em>, ma non avrebbe la stessa enfasi.
    I\u2019ve loved London ever since I was a child.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Una ultima cosa da sapere quando si usano never o ever \u00e8 che spesso \u00e8 possibile vedere i due avverbi insieme (non solo durante le lezioni di inglese online!<\/span><\/a>). Avete mai sentito la frase \u201cI will love you forever and ever<\/em>\u201d? oppure \u201cI will never ever <\/em>let you go\u201d?
    Entrambe fanno uso di tutti e due gli avverbi per rafforzare il significato di sempre<\/strong> (nel primo caso) e mai <\/strong>(nel secondo caso). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
