Ti prometto che entro la fine di questo articolo avrai imparato alla perfezione di che cosa si tratta e<strong> come si forma il future in the past,<\/strong>\u00a0grazie a questa guida\u00a0<em>step by step!<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Future in the past: come si forma?<\/h2>\n\n<p>La cosa migliore per capire <strong>come si forma il future in the past <\/strong>\u00e8 partire dagli esempi:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Since she was small, she knew <strong>she would become<\/strong> an astronaut.<\/em><br \/>\n(Sin da piccola, sapeva che sarebbe diventata astronauta)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>He was going to see<\/strong> the match, but it was cancelled last minute.<\/em><br \/>\n(Avrebbe dovuto vedere la partita, ma \u00e8 stata cancellata d\u2019improvviso)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>I told him the news in person because <strong>we were having lunch<\/strong> together that day.<\/em><br \/>\n(Gli raccontai la notizia di persona dato che avremmo pranzato insieme quel giorno)<\/p>\n<p>Gi\u00e0 da queste prime frasi puoi notare alcune caratteristiche del <strong>future in the past.<\/strong> Osservando i verbi evidenziati, vedrai che questo tempo verbale pu\u00f2 assumere diverse strutture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>WOULD<\/em> seguito dall\u2019infinito senza \u201cto\u201d (detto <em>bare infinitive<\/em>, l\u2019infinito spoglio o&#8230; \u201cnudo\u201d!)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>WAS\/WERE<\/em> seguito da going to + <em>bare infinitive<\/em><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>WAS\/WERE<\/em> seguito dal verbo in <em>-ING<\/em>, ovvero il <em>past continuous.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In effetti, le strutture del <strong>future in the past<\/strong> replicano per certi versi quelle che utilizziamo abitualmente <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">per esprimere eventi che avverranno in futuro<\/span>, ovvero:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>future simple (WILL + bare infinitive)<\/em>, il pi\u00f9 comune, usato per <em>spontaneous decisions<\/em> e <em>predictions<\/em> basate sulle proprie sensazioni<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>IS\/ARE + going to<\/em>, utilizzato per <em>intentions<\/em> e <em>predictions<\/em> basate su fatti<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><em>IS\/ARE<\/em> + verbo in <em>-ING<\/em> (<em>present continuous<\/em>), per comunicare <em>planned decisions<\/em> pianificate in dettaglio e <em>on the calendar<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nota come cambiano i verbi modali <em>(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WILL vs WOULD<\/span>)<\/em> e il tempo dell\u2019ausiliare <em>TO BE<\/em> (<em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">IS\/ARE vs WAS\/WERE<\/span><\/em>). Il confronto non \u00e8 casuale e ci aiuta infatti a capire meglio come utilizzare queste diverse forme di futuro. Continua a leggere!<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Future vs. Future in the past<\/h2>\n\n<p>Ritorniamo ai nostri esempi e questa volta osserviamo gli altri verbi presenti nelle frasi, visibili in grassetto:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Since Alice <strong>was<\/strong> small,<strong> she knew<\/strong> she would become an astronaut.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>He was going to see the match, but <strong>it was cancelled<\/strong> last minute.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>I told<\/strong> him the news in person because we were having lunch together that day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Riconosci il tempo verbale? <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Si tratta del simple past:<\/span> le azioni e i pensieri riportati in queste frasi sono infatti tutti ambientati nel passato. A questo punto facciamo finta di viaggiare nel tempo al momento esatto a cui queste frasi si riferiscono e di vederle pronunciate come in un fumetto:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Since Alice <strong>was<\/strong> small, she <strong>knew<\/strong> she would become an astronaut.<\/em><br \/>\n(Frase detta da Alice da piccola): <em><strong>I know<\/strong> I will become an astronaut!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>He was going to see the match, but <strong>it was cancelled<\/strong> last minute.<\/em><br \/>\n(Frase detta prima di sapere della cancellazione): <em>I am going to see the match!<\/em><br \/>\n(Frase detta poco dopo dall\u2019organizzazione): <em>The match <strong>is cancelled!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>I <strong>told<\/strong> him the news in person because we were having lunch together that day.<\/em><br \/>\n(Frase che mi dico mentre decido cosa fare): <em>I think I\u2019ll tell him in person because we are having lunch together today.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nota come cambiano i tempi verbali! Il future simple (<em>will + bare infinitive<\/em>) si accompagna al simple present, mentre il <strong>future in the past<\/strong> (<em>would + bare infinitive<\/em>) al simple past. Proprio come in un viaggio immaginario, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">il futuro nel passato ci permette dunque di esprimere quello che nel passato immaginiamo succeder\u00e0 nel futuro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ricorda: no future in time clauses!<\/span> Come per tutti i futuri, non possiamo utilizzare il <strong>future in the past<\/strong> nelle frasi che iniziano con espressioni temporali quali: <em>when, while, before, after, by the time, as soon as, if, unless, etc<\/em>. Ricorda che <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in questi casi bisogna utilizzare sempre il simple past!<\/span><br \/>\nExample:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I told Annie that when <strong>you would arrive,<\/strong> we would go out for an ice cream. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Not Correct<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I told Annie that when <strong>you arrived,<\/strong> we would go out for an ice cream. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Correct<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Time to tell stories:<\/em> come si forma il future in the past?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Ora dovrebbe essere chiaro come si usa e <strong>come si forma il future in the past.<\/strong> Adesso, con l&#8217;aiuto di una storia, possiamo includere il <strong>future in the past<\/strong> tra i tempi verbali che chiamiamo <em>narrative tenses<\/em> (ovvero: simple past, past continuous, past perfect e past perfect continuous) perch\u00e9 ci permette di fare delle previsioni future, vere o immaginate, nel corso della nostra storia.<\/p>\n<p>Leggi ad esempio la breve storia di <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mae Carol Jemison, la prima astronauta nera nello spazio,<\/span> per capire meglio:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Mae Carol Jemison is an American physician, scientist, and astronaut.
